Selma 50 and me

3/7/15-50 yrs..bloody Sunday
Selma, Alabama. A black President. A young man who was beaten and bloodied on that bridge is a US Congressman.
I can work on a proposal for my business. I can sit at a table with brilliant Ecsu graduates and strategize. I can fellowship with my sorors..freely. I can celebrate my besties niece and her husband's baby. I can mc my sorors beautiful 40 th.
Yet..we are not done. Selma .
Bloody Sunday put brutality main stream... Change ..came
.We are not done. ..we cannot stop.
Fear must not stop us...
50 short years ago..black ..white.Jew..christian..stood together against legal tyranny.

But we are not done..step by step..folks are trying to dismantle.
Our work..ou r rights..we cannot stop
Let's not let this be a moment
Let this be a movement

Ferguson

11/24/2014...I learned that the cop who killed Mike Brown, would not be indicted. I was numb, but not surprised. The fox judged the fox.
He was going to win and now what do we do.
We  should protest. We should register and vote. We should demand transparency from our government officials. We should hold our government officials accountable. We should run for office. We should demand accountability and sensitivity from our police departments. We should run for office.  We should engage in our communities.

Speak up..speak up..speak up.
Change the system.

Today is May 6, 2014. Today is Election Day in many cities. Today is Election Day in Hampton, Virginia.

Know your polling place. Have your id. Go and Vote before 7:00 PM today. Know your rights, if you do not have your id, do not leave Vote Provisionally.

City wide Elections affect you personally, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR POWER ON THE TABLE.

Embrace Your Power and Awesomeness

Today,  I was on a mission.  I wanted to Vote→Shop→Relay for life→see my canceranhli8tor daughter's film debut→walk the survivor lap with my soror &organize my mail....all before noon.

Welllllllll LIFE happens.
Hubby decided that he wanted
To have lunch....

So, of course I stopped to have lunch with my T.

Welll that threw me off !!

 

I was able to Vote + shop but I missed my canceranhli8tor daughter's film debut.
I was able to organize my mail.

I exercised my power...I made a choice..I walked with my Soror.  It was amazing.  She was thrilled that I was there. I WAS thrilled to walk with her cause she is my soror and friend.  Now this does not dismiss my disappointment in missing my canceranhli8tor daughter's film debut,  it just means we CANNOT DO EVERYTHING!

 

Today I embraced my power. I made certain my Voice was heard. I embraced my awesomeness and celebrated my survival. I embraced my Soror's awesomeness and celebrated her survival.  I celebrated my hubby's awesomeness and stopped my day to spend time with him. I celebrated my canceranhli8tor daughter's awesomeness by congratulating her on her film debut.

Today embrace your power and celebrate your awesomeness! !

Power of YOUR Vote!! Elect people who LOOK OUT FOR YOU!

As you know, I am a passionate proponent for the Restoration of Rights. I developed, designed and spearheaded the Restoration of Rights One Stop Shop Clinic Concept. I have followed each Governor and updated my materials to reflect their changes.

Well yesterday, I was thrilled to be at the table with other key players and stake holders in this process and was able to hear the News! Changes are on the table, Effective April 21, 2014. The changes are as follows:

1. Persons convicted of Drug Offenses are now classified in the Non-Violent Category. What that means boys and girls is that they request to have their rights restored on-line. This means that if you were convicted of distribution or manufacturing of Drugs, you no longer have to wait. You can submit your information now. Now you still have to have paid all your fines and be off probation or parole( off papers)...but this is monumental!!

      2. The other change on the table, is for the Violent Offender Category. You no longer have to wait 5 years to apply to have your rights restored, you only have to wait 3.

Now you may ask , why if obtaining your rights so important. Reason being , because it gives you power. What power, you might ask? It give you the Power of The Vote. If give you the opportunity to impact how your Country, State and City is run. Who runs it, shoot it might even be you, who is in Charge.

Knowledge & the Power of Your Voice

I have always been an advocate for Voting. Always! My mom often shared how in 1955 in Malvern, Arkansas, she went to the court house to register to vote. Now that was no small feat. The very idea of thinking about voting for a black person was dangerous. We have all heard the stories of many heroes, white and black who died for the right to vote. My Mom had courage.

Fast forward to April 15, 2014......... The men and women of the National Pan Hellenic Council of the Peninsula are sponsoring a Voter Information Forum. This Forum will give citizens in Hampton and Newport News and opportunity to hear what their candidates plan to do for their city.  YOU have an opportunity to pose a question. Fifty-nine years ago, my mother and other African Americans WOULD NOT have had an opportunity to ENGAGE with their candidate. Most certainly a organization comprised of African American organizations would not have had the opportunity to host such a forum.

Now make no mistake, this is not about black and white; it is about Power & Knowledge. Your Voice, Your Vote is powerful! Use your power wisely. Be informed!!
